History

Thornhill CC

Thornhill's historical roots stretch as far back as the Roman times, when a road and fort were established nearby at Carronbridge. The village we see today took shape as a planned settlement following the construction of the Dumfries to Glasgow Road in 1715. By the early 1800s, several coaching inns had sprung up, one of which – The Buccleuch Hotel – still stands proudly in its original spot.

Within a four-mile radius, you’ll find three castles to explore.

  • Closeburn Castle is a 12th-century tower house and the oldest continuously occupied one in Scotland – now modernised and open to visitors.
  • Drumlanrig Castle, built in 1679, is set within grand estate grounds, featuring formal gardens, woodlands, and a family adventure playground.
  • Morton Castle, originally built in the 11th-century, sits in a stunning rural setting. Now a romantic semi-ruin, it remains a favourite for visitors seeking a moment of peaceful history.

This is just a glimpse of what Thornhill has to offer – our village is rich in heritage, full of life, and welcoming to all.
