Thornhill

Community Council

Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District was formed fifty years ago. Its members meet weekly on Wednesdays @18:45 in The Buccleuch and Queensberry Arms Hotel, Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill. We currently have 25 members throughout the Nith and Cairn Valleys, stretching from Sanquhar and Kirkconnel in the north through to Holywood in the south.

We are proud to be part of a global network of volunteers, trying to make the world a better place, be it here in Dumfries and Galloway or elsewhere in the world where famine, drought, sickness are present, or where small communities need practical help in improving their future.

We fund-raise at local, national and international levels.

In Thornhill our events have included the Cheltenham Gold Cup Race afternoon, one of our most popular fund-raising occasions of the year – helping the club to raise in the region of £4,000 which benefits some of the principal cancer charities in this country. This year our nominated Charities are Maggie’s, Leukaemia Care and Young Lives vs Cancer.

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District holds an annual Am-Am golf competition at Thornhill Golf Club. The event, which benefits local charities and causes, takes place in July, raising close on £4,000. The Rotary Club uses this beautiful course for the day, and it’s also a special day for amateur golfers.

We support local schools in mid- and Upper Nithsdale with skills-building competitions in photography, art, writing and cooking.

We host guest speakers to our highly social, weekly meetings where in a very informal atmosphere, we can discover much about what is happening locally and further afield.
